Yearly Bookburning

Postby nqvs on 12 Aug 2009, 20:22

It is time again for one of the merriest activities Oxfat has to offer - the yearly bookburning. This year, the activity will take place on

Saturday, August 15th
20:00
in front of the White Horse

We will have a sizeable bonfire of books our jury has classified as heretical. As usual, we have the classic authors - Pullman, Eddings, LeGuin, Bluh - but also a wide range of other books our supporters have submitted over the course of the past year. There will be chanting performances, dances around the fire, and beer and snacks at affordable prices.

It is still possible to submit books to the jury for evaluation of heresy until Friday evening. This year, the jury consists of me, myself, I and Noel Q. von Schneiffel. (In case of a hung vote, I have 2 votes.)
Noel Q. von Schneiffel

Tolkien! Tu my guiding lux!
Ego lego tibi books
Every dies, tota noctes
Lego quod your mens concoctes!

I'd also like to nominate the works of Hermes Trismegistos for the burning ceremony. I distinctly recall that he claims that balrogs have wings,

Remember that books to be burnt must be approved by FATS administration. There have been cases in the past where books have been burnt for contradicting one faculty member's private interpretation (which was, incidentally, incorrect). That will not be allowed.

All the books mentioned by title by Dr. von Schneiffel may be burnt. We will want a list of the other titles.

Who is Hermes Trimegistos? He sounds like a troll.

Hermes Trismegistos ("Hermes the three times greatest") was a late Greek name for the god Hermes, regarded as the source of all human knowledge. He was said to be the author of the so-called Hermetic Writings, a voluminous collection of late classical litarature with astrological, medical, alchemistic, magical and religious-philosophic content. The writings exerted a considerable influence om medieval mysticism. Much of it has been preserved in Greek, Latin or Arabic.

Modern researchers suspect that a considerable part of the writings were the work of two mystagogues called Trollos Forchohammaros and Dirkos Tiberios.

Did either Hermes Trimegistos or his alter egos know much about Tolkien?

Many of those who possess the Higher Wisdom believe that Hermes Trismegistos was Tolkien's name in a previous incarnation.

Fascinating. This would make an excellent research project: Tolkien Before Tolkien. And it would make a great TV series, too, with lots of cool merchandise such as action figures in the shape of various Tolkien avatars.
